Social Distancing

This guide will help you understand what HSU is doing to ensure social distancing and what your responsibilities are in campus spaces.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Social distancing AND face coverings are the primary tools to prevent the spread of COVID-19. 
  • HSU has developed guidelines for specific types of spaces on campus.

Everyone reporting to campus will have some risk of exposure to COVID-19 after repopulation occurs. Following these guidelines does not guarantee that COVID-19 infection cannot occur, but it does actively reduce risk to students, faculty, staff, and the public when all guidelines are followed in coordination with prevention measures  like face coverings, handwashing, wellness checks, and increased sanitation. 

The following are guidelines for anyone reporting to campus and the steps HSU will take to mitigate risk of infection for when activities cannot be done virtually. 

While on campus you must:

  • Stay at least six feet from other people whenever possible.
  • Face coverings are required at all times indoors on campus, and outdoors anytime you cannot maintain a 6 foot distance from others. 
  • Do not gather in groups and stay away from crowds 
  • Follow all instructions that will be posted on campus signs

CDC Social Distancing Guidelines

Guidelines and safety measures for specific spaces:

Conference Rooms

  • All meetings with more than 10 individuals are required to be virtual.  
  • Signs will  indicate where NOT to sit or the furniture that SHOULD NOT be removed or rearranged. 
  • Prior to the meeting, organizers of meetings will be encouraged to wipe down shared surfaces with disinfectant or disinfecting wipes such as door handles, light switches, tables, chair armrests, and computer equipment, etc.  

Break Rooms/Kitchenettes

  • HSU will limit the use/number of people in break rooms/kitchenettes to allow for six feet of social distancing at all times. The new maximum occupancy for each space will  be posted on the outside of the door. If it is not on display, assume maximum occupancy is one person and do not enter unless the room is empty.
  • Employees should wipe down counters, refrigerator handles, and other common use items (coffee machines, microwaves, etc.) prior to each use. 
  • HSU will consider implementing a breakroom user schedule or creating an extended or flexible lunch period to accommodate distancing.


  • Floor signage or vertical sign stands will be used to ensure customers and clients maintain a safe distance while standing in line. 
  • Food service spaces may be monitored at entrance and exit to ensure crowding does not occur.  
    • Single entrance and exit may need to be considered within fire marshal parameters.
  • Food service amenities may use acrylic dividers between the service provider and customer.

Office Areas

  • HSU will rearrange employees who have workstations within six feet of each other. Physical barriers may not always be enough for long periods of time. 
  • An acrylic or other physical barrier will be provided for front desk staff if person-to-person contact can occur or if six feet of distance between a visitor and front desk staff cannot be maintained. Environmental Health & Safety must approve barriers prior to order and installation.
  • Do not approach a colleague’s work station, and be mindful even if there are no physical reminders.
  • HSU will place signs on chairs to indicate where not to sit, or remove or rearrange furniture to promote social distancing. 
  • For people who may need to wait in line, social distancing floor signage will be placed outside of the office in the hallway to indicate appropriate social distance between persons. Floor signage will be placed outside buildings (or service area) if necessary.
  • HSU will place signs on or outside doors to indicate  proper procedures: i.e. “Please wait here until the next available seat is open.”
  • Common areas and items such as doorknobs, light switches, etc. should be sanitized by a designated user of the space at the beginning, middle, and end of each shift.
  • If six feet of social distancing is not feasible for small shared offices, HSU will arrange for alternate work shifts so two or more people are not present at the same time.


  • HSU is evaluating classrooms to allow for social distancing. Each lecture hall will have a new maximum occupancy and class sizes must be dramatically reduced.
  • Signs will indicate which chairs/desks/lab bench workstations should not be used.  Furniture may also be removed or rearranged to promote social distancing
  • Door handles, counters, desks, and shared equipment will be sanitized by designated entities prior to each class.

Labs, Shops, Athletics Facilities, and Other Instructional Spaces 

  • HSU is evaluating labs and other spaces to allow for social distancing
  • HSU will consider the need for a physical barrier if lab demonstrations or other activities require students to come within six feet of the instructor or each other. 
    • Lab attendance may need to be staggered
    • Lab stockroom service counters will be sanitized throughout the day while in use, and floor signage will be placed to maintain six feet of space for people waiting in line.
  • Signs will indicate which chairs/desks/lab bench workstations should not be used. Furniture may also be removed or rearranged to promote social distancing
  • Other types of activities, such as athletic practice, music practice, and more will continue to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Hallways, Stairwells, and Buildings 

  • Classroom use will be staggered to spread out occupied classrooms and allow for sanitizing.  
  • Beginning and end times of classes will be staggered to reduce foot traffic in buildings and on campus walkways and allow for sanitation between periods.
  • The daily number of classes will be reduced. 
  • Close contact will be reduced by controlling building entrances and exits, and marking stairwells as one-way “up” or “down” to limit people passing face-to-face.  


  • In most cases only one person at a time should be in an elevator car
    • Elevators where more than one rider can be present will be indicated 
    • Riders should stand in opposite corners of the elevator to maximize distance
  • Floor signage may be placed inside elevators to remind riders to social distance.


  • HSU will place signs on doors reminding about social distancing and indicating the  maximum occupancy for each restroom.
    • Do not exceed the restroom maximum occupancy posted on the door.
    • Some restrooms may only allow one person safely, so people may wait on the floor signage outside or may return to check back later.
  • HSU will ensure handwashing signage is in place.
  • Sinks, stalls, and urinals may be blocked off to allow for social distancing.  

Sidewalks and Bridges 

  • Large campus walkways will be configured to create two lanes of traffic with alternate directions. 
  • HSU may consider making other campus walkways one-way to avoid close interaction and place signage at both ends of narrow walkways to indicate one-way traffic. 

Vehicles, Carts, and Shuttle Buses

  • Only one person will be allowed in University-owned carts and other two-seat vehicles, unless short duration trip drop off of person and equipment in an open aired cart.
  • The Student Disabilities Resource Center van will only allow one person in every other row.
  • Buses and other vehicles designed to haul multiple individuals will need to be individually evaluated by Environmental Health & Safety.

University Housing & Dining Facilities
