Update on Second-Round Vaccinations at HSU

April 9, 2021 - 3:57pm

Humboldt State University is now focused on administering second-round doses of COVID-19 vaccines due to limited vaccine supplies and time constraints.

Humboldt County Public Health was unable to provide an additional (first dose) allotment of vaccines to Humboldt State University this week, in part due to the state’s changing vaccine allotment strategy.

For this reason, in addition to the expectation that the University will be unable to acquire additional vaccines earmarked for first doses, and to provide second doses within the recommended time frame before the Student Health & Wellbeing Services (SHWS) closes on May 21, HSU will focus on administration of the second dose of vaccine for all who had their first dose at SHWS.

If the SHWS has unused doses of vaccine, individuals who are on the waiting list for the first dose will be contacted by SHWS and scheduled for an appointment to receive the vaccine.

As outlined in a March 30 message to campus, here is the process of vaccinations and appointments for second doses:

  • You will receive the same vaccine brand as your first dose.
  • The card you received at the clinic after your first vaccination included a tentative date for a followup dose.
  • Your second dose may be later than the date that was indicated on your vaccination card. According to the CDC, “the second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines may be administered up to 6 weeks (42 days) after the first dose.”
  • HSU will only be able to provide second round vaccinations to those who received their first vaccination through the University.

All Humboldt County residents—including HSU staff, faculty, and students—who wish to receive the vaccine are encouraged to submit their interest at Myturn.ca.gov. Most local pharmacies are also providing vaccinations—if interested, contact them directly.
