Reminder: CARES Emergency Funds for Students

May 20, 2020 - 8:49am

Humboldt State University has successfully allocated millions in emergency funds to 5,200 HSU students through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. CARES is a new law meant to help individuals and businesses, including colleges and universities, cover emergency expenses related to COVID-19.

Under the CARES Act, students who filed a 2019-20 FAFSA and who are eligible for Federal Financial Aid based on their submission of the FAFSA were eligible to automatically receive the CARES emergency grant.

Students who did not file a FAFSA and are otherwise eligible for financial aid are eligible to receive CARES funding, as well. As a reminder, students must verify their general eligibility for federal aid by submitting a CARES application, which is available on the Financial Aid Office website, no later than June 15. Requests will take one to two weeks to process.

International and undocumented students, who are not eligible for the CARES grant, were awarded and disbursed grants through institutional funds early this week.
