Impact of COVID on Communities of Color

The HSU community has rallied and supported one another during the challenges of recent months. Now, as we head into the summer break, it is important to continue with that and also to be aware of the disparate impact of the pandemic, which has amplified a number of equity issues and raised concerns about bias faced by people of color and people with other marginalized identities and their intersections. 

It is important to be aware that, while the pandemic has affected us all, our experiences of the pandemic are different because of systemic inequities that have impacted equitable access to health, housing, education, and employment for communities of color.

 An example of this is the requirement to wear face coverings, which is meant to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. At the same time, they have hindered our ability to communicate our emotions, exacerbating racial profiling, and stereotypes faced by communities of color, particularly African American and Latino men. Asian Americans have been scapegoats of the virus and targets of xenophobic rhetoric, as well. 

 Please avoid making assumptions based on race, ethnicity, ability, and age and be mindful of the socio-economic disparities that have been made starker in the last few months. Also, be aware that bias and discrimination can take many forms and may arise in unexpected ways during these times of physical distancing. We are all experiencing stress and anxiety. We’re also grieving over losing loved ones to the virus and missing major milestones in life, such as graduation. Take time to be mindful of your actions and your responses and work to show compassion and understanding for one another.
